in this text document we describe how to successfully install the firmware upgrade and all necessary tools to enable the automatic BitTorrent downloads.
Do make sure you follow all these steps correctly, or it may not work.

Getting started

1. Make sure you have inserted two SATA-harddisk into the DNS-323; and are familiar how to connect the wires. (the most common scenario : the ethernet cable from the DNS-323 should go to one of the free LAN-ports of your router)
2. We will now first start upgrading the DNS-323 to firmware 1.05. Bittorrent will not work on DNS-323 if firmware version 1.05 is not loaded

Upgrading the firmware (only if your DNS-323 was not shipped with firmware version 1.05. You can find this out on the sticker at the bottom of the DNS-323 --> F/W ver. 1.0X)

1. Run the 'easy search utility" from D-Link (version 4.2.0.0)
2. Make sure the 'windows firewall' has not popped-up, and is not hidden under the 'easy search utility'. Just move the 'easy search utility' a little on your screen, and if the windows firewall popped-up make sure to allow the 'easy search utility'. If it did not pop up, just forget about that.
3. In the 'easy search utility' click 'Refresh'; and you will see the DNS-323 showing. Probably it will have a generaic name like dlink-XXXXX
4. What is important is to write down the IP adress. Example : 192.168.0.15
5. Now, open your browser, and type the IP adress you wrote down. (not the one above which was just an example, but the one you see in the 'easy search utility')
6. type http://192.168.0.15 (in our example) in your browser
7. It will ask to choose the hard drive configuration. In our example we will choose 'standard' and just go through the different steps. (If you are only upgrading the firmware, you obviously don't need to reformat the hard disks)
8. You will be asked to enter the Login (standard = admin) and password (standard = blank). Make sure to choose the option 'CONFIGURE' !!! (and not 'download')
9. Now go to the tab 'TOOLS', and then to the sub-tab 'FIRMWARE'
10. Now browse for the Firmware file version 1.05 (wherever you have saved the file), and click 'apply' and the upgrade process will start.
11. After the restart the upgrade process is finished. Well done !

Enabling Bittorrent

1. Just close the DNS-323 windows in your browser, or put it aside for the time being
2. Start the 'easy search utility' again (version 4.2.0.0; older versions don't have the bittorrent function !)
3. In the right side of the menu you will find the 'BitTorrent' tab. (make sure the DNS-323 is still turned on, and the cables are still all connected !)
4. Now, click the 'BitTorrent' tab, and the function will be installed on the DNS-323.

What's next ?

1. In your browser, open the startpage of your DNS-323 (the IP-adress you wrote down during the firmware upgrade process)
2. Instead of choosing 'Configuration' choose 'DOWNLOADS'
3. You now see a new added tab 'BITTORRENT'
4. Last step is to open the ports on your router. The most easy option is to put the DNS-323 in a so called DMZ-zone, but thi sis not recommended for security reasons. A better and recommended way is to open the ports on the router. If you are using a D-Link router you are lucky, since the BitTorrent ports are allready pres-selected. (in the tab 'advanced' and then 'port forwarding'). Basically you have to enter the IP-address of your DNS-323 in the router under 'port forwarding' and make sure you chose 'Bittorrent' as application from the list. Opening ports is out of the scope of this document, but for a complete explanation please visit www.fortforward.com

The use of Bittorrent itself will not be explained here, but for the starters just type 'torrent + mininova' in google, and make sure your harddisks are big enough ;-)
